Work begins at Catagunya Dam in Tasmania
Structural Systems were recently awarded the contract for anchoring works at Catagunya Dam in Tasmania.

Catagunya dam is located in Central Tasmania, Australia, and is owned and operated by Hydro Tasmania. This dam, which was completed in the early 1960's is on the Derwent River and is one in a chain of dams for hydro-electric power generation. Anchors installed when the dam was initially constructed are thought to be suffering corrosion. Hydro Tasmania has decided to install new anchors to eliminate any uncertainty about the integrity of the original anchors.

The project will exclusively utilise 90No. 91 strand anchors with a minimum breaking load (MBL) of 25,389kN, making this only the second ever application of 91 strand anchors, after Canning Dam which was also completed by Structural Systems. Catagunya Dam's permanent anchors will have the highest breaking load ever installed through the use of 279kN (15.7mm) strand. The vertical anchors will be installed in both abutments and some 8.5m below

All of the new replacement anchors will be monitorable and restressible throughout their expected 100 plus year working life.

The 365m wide dam is up to 49m high above the foundation and has a spillway crest width of 126m at up to 42m above foundation level. The world record anchors of up to 85m long will be installed between early 2009 and mid 2010.
