Structural Systems have recently broadedned our horizons and have set up a branch in South Africa in partnership with Group Five Civil Engineering, one of the major civil and building contractors in the country.
The fields in which the South African operation will initially be providing site services and expertise throughout Southern Africa are as follows:
Post-Tensioning in civil and building structures
Incremental Launching of bridges
Slipform construction
SSL have currently secured two contracts with Group Five with a few more prospective contracts on the horizon. The first contract secured is with Group Five Civil Engineering in Cape Town for the Koeberg Interchange upgrade contract, involving the construction of two new bridges at one of the major road intersections in the city. The bridges are a combination of post-tensioning pre-cast beams supporting in-situ cast decks and 4 in-situ post-tensioned bridges with spans of up to 60m over existing rail lines and highways.

The total PT tonnage on the contract is approximately 650 tonnes and it will be the largest single post-tensioned bridge contract done in Africa to date.
The second contract is also with Group Five Civil Engineering and involves three incrementally launched bridges which form part of a major highway improvement project in the Johannesburg area. |

Two of the bridges are straight on a slight downhill grade with each bridge having a total length of 150m. The third is a horizontally and vertically curved bridge with a total length of approximately 400m. Structural Systems (Africa) have been contracted for temporary works design, all post-tensioning works and incremental launching.
